Congratulations to four pupils from Cardiff High School for becoming this year’s winners of Trading Standards Young Consumers of the Year 2011 competition.
Teams of young people from secondary schools across Cardiff competed for the title at the School of Management, University of Wales Institute, Western Avenue.
They were put through their paces by quizmasters from Trading Standards and guest quizmaster Rachel Treadaway – Williams from BBC X-Ray.
The four Cardiff High School pupils Sam Williams, George Govier, Megan Wilson and Rhys Williams will now go forward to represent Cardiff at the Welsh Regional Final of the Young Consumer of the Year competition to be held in Llandrindod Wells on 8th March.
Young Consumer of the Year is a unique annual competition co-ordinated nationally by the Trading Standards Institute and organised locally by the Trading Standards Services. The aim of the competition is to educate 14 to 18-year-olds in a wide range of consumer related issues to enable them to become more informed and confident consumers.
The competition invites teams of four young people to compete in a knockout quiz which tests them on a range of consumer issues including:
- Consumer Affairs and Legal Issues
- Money, finance and credit
- Food and Drink
- Social Responsibility and the Environment
- Europe and Travel
- Government and the Economy
Hundreds of schools from across the UK rise to this challenge each year to become the nation’s top young consumers.
Councillor Judith Woodman, Cardiff Council Deputy Leader said: “The Young Consumer Competition is an important annual event which makes the competitors aware of their responsibilities and rights as consumers and it is good to be able to support a positive initiative in a fun and engaging way. Congratulations to Cardiff High School and best of luck in the finals.”
Innes Robinson, Teacher from Cardiff High School said: “The students worked hard to succeed in this competition. It was an exciting, nail-biting final with all four teams neck and neck until the very end. My students enjoyed the challenge and are now looking forward to taking part in the finals.”
This year the competition received support from a number of local organisations who provided sponsorship and prizes to make the event a success including UWIC School of Management, Careers Wales, Boulders, Team Sport, Cardiff Bus, Sainsbury’s, Marks & Spencer, Starbucks and Swalec.
