A member of the Cardiff Huskies sledge hockey team has been chosen to represent Great Britain at the European Championships held in Sweden this February.
Scotty Turner’s selection coincides with the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the sport in the UK.
The Cardiff Huskies sledge hockey team was founded in1996 and is part of the British Sledge Hockey Association (BHSA).
The club has been supported by Cardiff Council’s sport development team, Sport.Cardiff for more than 10 years.
Sledge hockey is for athletes with a lower limb disability and is based on the game of traditional ice hockey.
The size of the rink, rules and penalties are identical with the only difference being the athlete’s technical equipment.
Specially designed sledges are used to propel the athletes across the ice. They also use two playing sticks to push themselves and to control and shoot the puck.
Scotty first heard about the Huskies having attended the Wheelchair Sports Spectacular organised by Sport.Cardiff and Disability Sport Wales.
The an event gives children, young people and adults the opportunity to participate in over 20 different sports and is designed to spot those who might have a burgeoning talent or those who simply want to take part in sport and have fun.
Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture, Cllr Nigel Howells said: “The Huskies is committed to providing sledge hockey for people of all ages and ability levels.
“Over the years the club has produced an impressive six winter paralympians, a sign of the dedication and enthusiasm for the sport shown by both trainers and participants.
“The Wheelchair Sports Spectacular attracts participants from all over South Wales and the UK and continues to get more disabled people active and involved in sport”.
