When IT geek Matthew Nifield became a new father he decided to make sure his twins enjoyed a goodnight’s sleep – so developed an Apple Iphone app to help them.
Cardiff-born Matthew, 33, put together a range of 50 sounds on the colourfully designed White Noise Ambience app – ranging from ocean waves to a rain forest, steam train, frogs, a cat purring and even the sounds of a sprinkler, tumble drier and lawnmower.
The University of Glamorgan graduate, whose company logicworks (CORR) is based just outside San Francisco, said:
“Many people have trouble sleeping at night and listening to familiar sounds can help them get those much needed 40 winks. It’s surprising what sounds soothes people, anything from running water to the noise of a busy restaurant.
“When my twins, Maddie and Gwen were born last year, I wanted to help them sleep so I decided to work on an app that could be used by Iphone users. The sounds which help my daughters’ sleep are ocean wave and rain on a car but friends have told me things like traffic noise get the babies nodding off. There’s also picture of Maddie on the app sleeping soundly.
“Apart from the help with sleep, it’s also fun and I’ve now completed a specially designed version for the Ipad.”
Matthew launched both a paid-for app and a free one which comes with advertisements and they have been downloaded by Apple Iphone users from across the globe.
White Noise Ambience is not the first app Matthew has developed – he created online calculators for those using the ebay, ebid and Amazon auction sites. The free version even reached the top 20 of UK free apps in the finance section.
