Professor Paul Morgan, Dean of Cardiff University’s School of Medicine, has been appointed a member of the influential Medical Research Council’s (MRC) governing body.
The MRC is a publicly-funded agency responsible for co-coordinating and funding medical research. Its research strives to improve human health and quality of life by supporting world class medical research.
Governed by its Council the members help direct and oversee corporate policy, ensure effective management and make major policy and spending decisions.
Professor Morgan’s term runs until March 2015. Sir John Chisholm, Chairman of the MRC, said: “I am delighted to welcome Professor Morgan to the Council. He is an excellent appointment and I look forward to working with him.
“Dedicated Council members are vital to drive the MRC’s mission to tackle the major health challenges, and I am certain that Professor Morgan’s input will be both valuable and constructive.”
Professor Morgan’s appointment has been made by the Minister for Universities and Science in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments Code of Practice.
Professor Paul Morgan became Dean and Head of the School of Medicine in 2009, having previously held the position of Head of the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Immunology since 2001.
He is the current deputy chair of the Wales Office of Research and Development Funding Committee and a member of the Academy of Medical Sciences (AMS) Academic Careers Committee, having previously been a member of the AMS Council.
Professor Morgan is a research specialist in Clinical Immunology and has helped create an internationally respected research group, specialising in Complement Biology.
He has published over 300 research papers and reviews and remains research-active in the role of complement in a variety of inflammatory diseases. He holds fellowships from the Royal College of Pathologists and the Academy of Medical Sciences.
