Following a very successful run at Blackwood Miners’ Institute recently, Caerphilly Youth Theatre’s production ‘Bassett’ is set to be showcased once again, this time at a special performance at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff.
Written by James Graham, Caerphilly’s Youth Theatre will perform the production this Friday (15th April) at the Wales Millennium Centre’s Weston Studio, beginning at 7.30pm.
In association with National Theatre Connections 2011, Caerphilly County Youth Theatre will present ‘Bassett’, a pacy, funny and exhausting drama which looks at young people who have inherited a world at war, who, as they grow older, are starting to ask questions about conflicts, their country and themselves.
The story begins… It’s lunchtime and a group of GCSE pupils studying citizenship in a school in Wootton Bassett have been locked into a classroom by a supply teacher.
They are anxious to get out and attend a repatriation procession for a brave soldier who lost his life while fighting for his country. Tensions are mounting…
Director, Tony Gallagher says, “The actors involved with Caerphilly County Youth Theatre enjoy the challenge of their involvement in Bassett because it is a play being performed as the war in Afghanistan is actually happening. The thought-provoking nature of the play may encourage audience members to consider the effects of the constant ‘in your face’ reminder of war and the effect it could have on these young people”.
He continued, “Cast members feel the pupils at the school in Wootton Bassett are in a unique and perhaps at times, surreal situation compared to other pupils in other schools across the UK, because although they are thousands of miles away from war torn Afghanistan, they are constantly reminded of what is happening each time there is the repatriation of a soldier killed in action”.
Tickets cost £6 – the production contains some strong language is suitable for an audience aged 15+.
