Students from a Cardiff school have been recognised for their artistic talents and efforts to promote Welsh recipes.
Kyle Evans and Sylvester Becmer of Fitzalan High School designed posters to encourage people to get back in the kitchen and enjoy cooking Welsh food following a visit to the school by Sian Bassett Roberts, director of television production company, Film42, who produce the Coginio DVD series to showcase recipes and food from across Wales.
Sian is a role model on the Welsh Assembly Government’s Dynamo project, a programme that promotes entrepreneurship and aims to encourage young people to consider starting their own business or working for themselves. There are a number of role models across Wales who visit schools to share their stories, career paths and experiences with students in Year 9 and Year 12.
During Sian’s visit to Fitzalan, she spoke to a Year 9 group about her work and asked the pupils to design a poster to promote the Coginio DVDs, which shows viewers step by step how to cook some favourite Welsh recipes. Sian promised the class that if she liked any of the designs and decided to use them to produce posters, she would pay the young people for their work.
Kyle and Sylvester’s ideas impressed Sian and Trevor Burgess, co-director of Film42 so much that they decided to use one of the designs for their latest Coginio poster. Sian returned to Fitzalan before Christmas to present the boys with a copy of the DVD and £20 each for their designs.
Executive Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, Cllr Freda Salway, said: “I’m very pleased to hear about Kyle and Sylvester’s efforts and the recognition they have gained. My congratulations go to them both. It’s important that young people have role models to look up to and have the opportunity to find out about business and all the options available to them for their future careers.”
Sian said: “ All of the students in the group were really enthusiastic about the designing of a poster, and had some great ideas. We decided to go with Kyle and Sylvester’s idea because it was very striking, different and worked well with our “Coginio” branding. I really enjoyed presenting to the group. They were a very lively group with great suggestions. I hope that they also enjoyed the presentation”.
