Cardiff supports climate change campaign

Cardiff Council is lending its support to a global campaign to help prevent climate change.

This Monday (September 21), as part of the global TckTckTck campaign, Cardiff will join towns and cities around the world in sounding a Global Wake Up Call to wake up world leaders to the issues of climate change.

In Queen Street people supporting the campaign will gather to make their voices heard with their phone or clock alarms going off at exactly 12.18 pm, in conjunction with the other venues across the world.

TckTckTck is a global alliance of partners Avaaz.org, Oxfam, Greenpeace, and 350.org who have joined forces with many other organisations to arrange the global gathering to highlight concerns about climate change to world leaders.

Cardiff Council Leader Rodney Berman said: “Cardiff Council takes the issue of climate change very seriously and is helping to lead the way in tackling carbon emissions by becoming a Carbon Lite City.

“I was recently invited to address delegates at an international conference on climate change in Copenhagen, where I outlined the many advances the city is making within its own buildings. Cardiff Council is committed to making a 60% reduction in carbon emissions by 2018. As a part of that commitment, funding of £1 million is being invested in new energy efficiency measures in schools this year. The scale of this investment shows just how high a priority the issue remains in the city.”

Councillor Margaret Jones, Executive Member for Environment added: “I am proud of the achievements this city is making. Climate change is one of the greatest threats to environmental, social and economic sustainability facing the world today.

“If we don’t act now to reduce the risk of accelerated climate change then it could be too late and Cardiff really has taken big steps forward which are helping to reduce our contribution to greenhouse gas emissions.”
