Earth Hour was devised by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to raise awareness about global warming. The simple action of turning off lights for one hour helps to spread the message that urgent action is needed to combat global warming.

It’s the third year that Cardiff has taken part in Earth Hour, which was pioneered in 2007 by WWF-Australia in Sydney.

In 2009, over 80 countries took part in Earth Hour with many iconic building switching off lights.

Along with Cardiff Council buildings , The Senned, Pierhead Building and Crickhowell House will also switch off their lights in 2010.

Cardiff Council
leader Cllr Rodney Berman, said: “Cardiff Council will once again pledge its support to Earth Hour. Council buildings across the city will have their lights switched off.

“We all have to take responsibility and help tackle climate change. Earth Hour is a great way for everyone to reflect on how our actions are harming the planet.

“As a council we have made a commitment to reduce our carbon footprint, and we are working with the Carbon Trust to reduce the authority’s carbon emissions from non domestic building and waste by 60 per cent by 2018.”

Executive Member for Environment, Cllr Margaret Jones, said: “The simple act of switching your lights off for an hour can make a huge difference to the planet; I hope everyone who is able to do so will switch of their lights and support Earth Hour .”
