Cardiff University collaborations with industry delivering high-skilled maths graduates for the tough jobs market; creating a unique and continuous way of monitoring toxicity in water; and developing new technology to help remove water impurities in former South Wales coalfields have been recognised at the University’s annual innovation awards.
The University’s innovation awards, hosted by Cardiff University’s Innovation Network, are designed to recognise and celebrate the links and successful collaborations forged between the University and industry.
The 2011 Innovation Prize went to a successful collaboration between the University’s School of Mathematics and the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
The collaborative project created a new postgraduate statistics course offering skills for students ready to compete in the ever increasing tough jobs market and support the development of one of South Wales’ largest employers.
A 2011 Innovation Award went to a joint collaboration between the University’s School of Biosciences and water company, Cymtox, which led to the development of an innovative new product – the only real-time broadband continuous toxicity monitor.
The technology works by using bioluminescence to detect the presence of toxins and immediately warn of suspicious changes.
Also recognised with an Innovation Award was a collaboration between the University’s School of Engineering and The UK’s Coal Authority. The collaboration has helped create new ways of treating and removing impurities from water in former coal mines.
Vice-Chancellor Dr David Grant who presented the awards said: “The University’s Innovation Awards, now in their twelfth year, are an opportunity to celebrate connections and successful collaborations between the University and industry.
“This year’s winners are great examples of the work that the University is doing to help support industry in Wales and further afield to develop innovative business solutions.
“On behalf of the University, I congratulate the award winners for their outstanding achievements.”
The Innovation Awards are a key part of the University’s Innovation Network. Founded in 1996, Cardiff University Innovation Network aims to develop a strong network for business in the regional knowledge-economy.
The Network provides opportunities for business to business and business to university engagement across all disciplines.
