Cardiff University + GCSE maths revision = better results?

Budding mathematicians looking to hone their key skills ready for their GCSE exams will take part in a set of innovative three-day revision sessions at Cardiff University this week (Tuesday 19th – Thursday 21st April).

The revision sessions will see some 30 pupils from Cardiff and the South Wales Valleys schools descend on Cardiff University to take part in workshops run by qualified maths teachers and current University maths students to help fine tune maths skills and improve their chance of exam success.

The Cardiff sessions are part of similar events  taking place at Coleg Gwent, Ebbw Vale and the University of Glamorgan. In total, more than 100 of the most able and talented pupils from 12 schools across the South Wales Valleys are set to take part.

“Good exam results in Maths remain one of the most important factors in helping kick start a youngsters future academic and working opportunities in life,” according to Vicki Roylance, the University’s Senior Widening Access Officer, who organised the events across the centres.

“Holding this three day event will hopefully give extra support and help prepare them for the tough GCSE maths exams to come,” she adds.

Students who take part in the week will get the chance to follow a dedicated programme of study designed specifically to support and help their GCSE studies.

Organised by Reaching Wider, First Campus – a partnership between higher education institutions, further education colleges and schools in South East Wales – the sessions are designed to give the pupils advice, help and vital revision tips.

Vicki Roylance adds: “Revising for exams at this time of the year is always difficult and stressful. This event will not only help students with their revision but hopefully take away some of the pressure from the students, and their parents.

“It’s important that Cardiff University is able to support projects like this – not only to help build confidence but improve our links and collaboration with schools and colleges across the South Wales Valleys.”
