Cardiff Volunteer Sports Bureau is Officially Launched

Sport.Cardiff has launched an exciting new resource to enable people to access and sign up to volunteering opportunities across the city.

The Volunteer Sports Bureau VSB is a state-of-the-art online tool that will improve the efficiency and management of volunteers.

It enables volunteers to register and access a variety of opportunities at the click of a button whilst also providing a service for ‘providers’ of volunteer opportunities to post their placements on the site making them more accessible to a wider audience.

By registering on the site people can keep up-to-date with all the latest events and ways to participate whether a seasoned volunteer or someone interested in getting involved for the first time.

There is also a personal coaching profile for members to log the hours they complete.

The site is accessible to people of all ages and abilities and volunteer opportunities are varied.

With the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games fast approaching there will also be information on how to become an ‘Ambassador’, the title given the official 2012 volunteers. Cardiff is set to play an important role in the Games as the city is hosting Olympic football matches at the Millennium Stadium and providing pre-game training camps for a number of Olympic and Paralympic teams. Selected Ambassadors will represent Cardiff by welcoming visiting spectators and teams to the city.

Volunteer roles will be diverse and could range from assisting Oscar Pistorius with training at the Cardiff International Sports Stadium to directing spectators to the Millennium Stadium for Olympic football matches. Sport.Cardiff assist in the city’s vision to be a World Class Capital for Sport and their mission is to enrich the lives of the people of Cardiff through clubs, coaching and competition with a focus on children and young people.

The team of dedicated officers work across the city focussing on the improvement of grassroots sports development in schools, clubs and communities.

Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture, Cllr Nigel Howells said: “Coaches and volunteers play a vital role in supporting sport in Cardiff and clubs, events, and activities across the city would not be able to happen without their invaluable contribution.

“We welcome anyone to register providing they have plenty of enthusiasm and a drive to support others in sport.

“Volunteers gain valuable experience, learn new skills, meet people and enjoy themselves whilst giving something back to their community. “This new service will improve the way we manage our sports schemes, keeping volunteers informed of all the latest opportunities.” Sport Cardiff operates Coaching and Volunteer Accreditation schemes to ensure the highest standard of sport is delivered to the people of Cardiff.
