The Coal Exchange in Cardiff Bay is to re-open on November 1.
November 5 sees the Alabama 3 playing live, coincidentally the last band to play the venue before it closed. Other bands lined up include the Buzzcocks who will be performing on 3 December,
Owned by the property development and construction group Macob, they had planned to convert the building into apartments until the credit crunch and now the original team – Coal Exchange Ltd have taken over the premises again.
Mike Johnson, owner of Coal Exchange Ltd told Welsh Icons:
“We are reopening the venue exactly as was. We have lots of bands lined up and are planning a very special New Year’s Eve party”
He added
“We will also be hosting the annual Welsh Fashion show and an international kickboxing event, we are all very excited”.
The building constructed between 1883 and 1886 as an impressive base from which to conduct trade negotiations regarding the coal mines of the South Wales Valleys – most of which was shipped to Cardiff for distribution. The building played an important role in the industrial Cardiff of the 19th century even to the extent that the first recorded million pound business deal ever was reportedly struck within its walls. It was designed by architect Edwin Seward.
It was also used as the ballroom location in the Dr Who Christmas special ‘Titanic’ staring Kylie Minogue.
