Carers Get A Taste Of Further Education

Carers in Rhondda Cynon Taf have the opportunity to undertake further education thanks to a pioneering Open University scheme.

Launched by Rhondda Cynon Taf and the Welsh Education Association, the Engagement Gateway allows carers in the county borough to achieve their personal goals and have the ability to develop their skills in a particular area of interest.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Carers Support Project is providing the opportunity for carers to undertake an Open University course of their choice, such as “Understanding Health”, “Making Sense of the Arts and “Starting with Psychology” – all free of charge.

The duration of the courses available are on average 10 to 20 weeks.

Carers who undertake an Open University course will receive ongoing support from their personal tutor, along with workshops every two to three weeks with other carers undertaking courses.

Here they will be able to meet with other carers, discuss ideas and improve their knowledge in each of the chosen areas.

Cllr Mike Forey, Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care and Well-being at Rhondda Cynon Taf Council said: “We recognise the incredible work undertaken by carers throughout the County Borough who devote so much of their lives to helping others.

“It is important that first-class services such as the Council’s Carers Support Project are there to assist carers in any way possible and they do this by introducing a whole host of pioneering scheme and workshops.

“The Engagement Gateway” is further proof of their dedication to support carers and allow them the opportunity to develop their skills and interests.”
