Cabinet members have approved a Young Carer’s Strategy – a comprehensive, multi agency approach that will shape how Denbighshire and its partner organisations provide support and practical help for the County’s young carers.
It is estimated there are around 2,000 young carers in Denbighshire, some of whom will be spending 50 hours or more a week caring for ill or disabled relatives.
The strategy, which was drawn up by the Children and Young People’s Partnership, will help identify young carers who do not currently access support and ensure that all young carers get the help, support and services they need. The strategy has been approved by the Strategic Partnership – the decision making body of Partnership.
The strategy will ensure there is a clearly understood approach to identifying what the young carer’s needs are along with clear referral processes through to agencies which are best placed to meet those needs.
It will also ensure there are measures in place to enable young carers to attend and achieve at school or college and have in place a range of leisure, play and informal learning opportunities and continue with support as the young carer reaches adulthood.
