One of Wales’ leading international musicians, harpist Catrin Finch brings her new album ‘Annwn’ to Theatr Mwldan, Cardigan on Friday 10 June. This will be one of her last performances this year, before she takes a well earned six months rest from the stage.
Harpist Catrin released her Annwn album of traditional Welsh music with her own electro-modern twist earlier this year and a special documentary was recently broadcast on S4C. Now Catrin and her four piece band Rusty Shackle bring Annwn to the Mwldan stage as part of a small summer tour of Wales.
The Annwn theme, taken from Welsh mythology means the Otherworld, a key place in the tales of the Mabinogion, a “world of delights and eternal youth, where disease is absent and food is ever-abundant”. Catrin said “I have always had a great interest in Welsh mythology and traditional Welsh music, which comes from and evokes these ancient times. Annwn conjures up images of worlds created by authors such as Tolkien and CS Lewis.”
Catrin’s name is well known to Mwldan audiences following her massively successful co-production project with Cimarron, which toured Wales on three separate occasions to huge acclaim from audiences and critics alike.
The youngest ever member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, Catrin was also the first Official Harpist to the Prince of Wales after Prince Charles re-introduced the honour. She has a Visiting Professorship at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and the Royal Academy of Music, she is renowned worldwide both as a solo artist and with some of the world’s most famous orchestras.
“After 15 years of almost non-stop performing, I’m taking a break from the stage to spend time writing and developing other projects, so this will be one of my final concerts for a while.”
