Catwg Primary School in Neath has been awarded the Peace Mala accreditation.
A Peace Mala flag was presented to the school by Terry Waite at the Peace Mala Festival of Interfaith and Culture for Education at The Monastery Manchester last week.
Peace Mala is a project for young people designed to promote friendship, respect and peace between people of all cultures, faiths and lifestyles. A Peace Mala is a symbolic double rainbow bracelet worn as a promise to help create a better world and to treat others as you would like them to treat you.
“We are thrilled that Catwg is the first school in Neath Port Talbot to be awarded the accreditation,” says headteacher Carol Bassett. “This was in recognition of our commitment to the Peace Mala principles,” she added.
Taking the Peace Mala message out into the local community was a major part of the school’s Peace Mala journey. Other activities included achieving the Green Flag three times, making a pilgrimage to St Catwg’s Church and setting up a peace garden and tree.
Charity work and establishing links with other world faiths have also featured in the pupils’ work.
“Catwg is proud of its inclusive ethos and we feel the Peace Mala message fitted well with the work we do in school encouraging and celebrating diversity,” added Carol.
Council Leader, Ali Thomas, said, “Congratulations to Catwg Primary School for achieving such a worthwhile award.
“It is important for young people to learn about global citizenship and diversity and this project gives them the opportunity to learn about other faiths and cultures.”
