Representatives from the Safer Vale Partnership have recently been in Llantwit Major to identify locations for CCTV.
Original plans identified the square in Llantwit Major as a prime location for CCTV in order to address longstanding alcohol-related issues. However, when the signal was tested during installation of the CCTV pole it was found that a sufficient signal could not be obtained at that height, resulting in the camera not being able to operate.
As a result, the pole has now been removed from the location and the footpath restored.
The Partnership is committed to allocating the CCTV funding within Llantwit Major and as a result has identified new locations. These include state-of-the-art upgrades to the two cameras surrounding the train station and a new camera outside the library which will cover the majority of Boverton Road. These will be linked back to the main control room in Barry and monitored by CCTV operators 24 hours a day.
The Partnership is confident that the camera locations, which will now cover the majority of the commercial area within Llantwit Major, will provide a heightened level of safety and reassurance.
Cllr Paul Church, Chairman of the Safer Vale Partnership, said: “I am fully aware of the positive impact CCTV can have in an area and I have no doubt that the residents of Llantwit Major will benefit from the safety and reassurance that comes with CCTV.”
The Safer Vale Partnership is still committed to tackling the alcohol-related issues within the square and hopes to revisit the issue in the near future once a technical solution is found.
