An exhibition is underway at Clwyd Theatr Cymru, showcasing artwork created by pupils from Sealand CP, Queensferry CP and Taliesin Junior School, Shotton, alongside professional textile artist Cefyn Burgess.
The pupils have been working with Cefyn Burgess to design and create material collages representing the story of Frances Williams, who boarded the prison ship the ‘Prince of Wales’ in 1787, bound for Botany Bay, Australia, and became the first Welsh Australian. Frances was from Whitford and had been convicted at Mold in 1783.
Cefyn Burgess was born and raised in the slate quarry village of Bethesda, North Wales, and is a BA (Hons) graduate of Manchester in woven textiles, and an MA graduate of The Royal College of Art in woven jacquard fabrics.
Funded by Flintshire County Council and the Arts Council of Wales this project has culminated with an exhibition at Clwyd Theatr Cymru which will run until November 21. It is being opened by the Chair of Flintshire County Council, Councillor Hilary McGuill, on Thursday 3 November 2011.
Councillor Nigel Steele-Mortimer, Executive Member for Education at Flintshire County Council said:
“This was a wonderful opportunity for pupils and teachers to work alongside a professional artist in developing their creative skills, and highlights the effectiveness of schools working collaboratively.”
