Join the celebrations at Swansea University’s stand at this year’s National Eisteddfod of Wales in the Vale of Glamorgan between 4-11 August.
Both the stand and activities on offer will be more prominent than ever with many attractions based on aspects of Swansea University and city life.
One highlight will be the launch of Hywel Teifi’s memorial fund which celebrates the former Professor of Welsh’s contribution to Welsh culture. A special reception will be attended by Hywel Teifi’s son, broadcaster, and honorary fellow of Swansea University, Huw Edwards and the new Archdruid of Wales, Dr Christine James.
Dr Christine James, Senior lecturer at Academi Hywel Teifi, Swansea University will also participate in a Welsh for Adults reception. She will present Sue Carey, South West Wales Welsh Learners Ambassador and Pembrokeshire’s 2012 Welsh Learner of the Year.
Swansea University’s sports provision will be highlighted at the end of the week when Swansea University’s Pro Vice Chancellor, Iwan Davies will reveal more about Swansea’s new Beach and Watersports Centre, 360, which will provide the public with various sporting activities and training opportunities when it opens its doors in September.
In various sessions Swansea University academic staff will elaborate on their fields of expertise. Professor Ken Morgan from the College of Engineering will talk about the famous vehicle, Bloodhound, Dr Kate Evans from the College of Science will concentrate on her research into parkour and Dr Siwan Davies from the College of Science will hold a question and answer session with adventurer Lowri Morgan, who recently received an honorary degree from the University.
Dr Siwan Davies will quiz Lowri about her breathtaking experiences in the Arctic. This will be followed by a showing of ‘GLIMPSE: Greenland’s disappearing ice’ which features a team of Swansea University glaciologists on adventurous field research to investigate how and why Greenland’s ice is changing.
Children and young people will be entertained all day long by activities at the stand, including animation sessions, face painting and lively performances by Trwbador, Arwel Lloyd, Fluidity group as well as the launch of Burum, the popular folk jazz band’s new CD.

There will be a mixture of interesting presentations, film showings and fun filled activities like the surfing competition and animation sessions – a warm welcome will await everyone at the stand!’’
Professor Richard B Davies, Swansea University’s Vice Chancellor added: ‘‘Our presence at the National Eisteddfod will be bigger and better than ever before this year which will enable us to showcase a wider range of University activities in an exciting and interesting way. The Eisteddfod will provide us with a great opportunity to demonstrate the increasing opportunities available to study subject areas through the medium of Welsh at the University.
