Celebrating the Creation of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David

The creation of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David will be celebrated at the University’s stand on the Eisteddfod maes on Tuesday, 3 August at 3pm.

The event will be the first public celebration since Her Majesty The Queen, on the recommendation of the Privy Council, approved an Order granting a Supplemental Charter to the University of Wales Lampeter, and directed the Lord Chancellor to apply the Great Seal to the Charter which will enable the University of Wales Lampeter and Trinity University College to merge.

During the event Dr Medwin Hughes, Vice-Chancellor will announce the University’s first Chairs.  Peter Davies,  Commissioner for Wales and Vice Chair of the UK Sustainable Development Commission, and Andrew Edwards, former Deputy Chief Constable for Wales, will be appointed Professors of Professional Practice in  recognition of the importance of, and the University’s  commitment to, the development and success of the public sector in Wales.

Dr Medwin Hughes said, “Peter Davies and Andrew Edwards’s vast experience and knowledge will enable the university to develop courses and its academic areas and research to enable it to contribute to policy development in relation to sustainability, public services and community development in rural Wales.  Their appointment reflects the way in which the University is working for the benefit of its communities by developing expertise that will place it on a world stage”.

He continued “The University of Wales Trinity Saint David offers a new model for post-16 education which brings together further and higher education to offer progression routes and opportunities for  communities in the region.  Already it has announced a statement of intent to form an educational group structure with the further education colleges in Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion as well as Swansea Metropolitan University.   The creation of the University of Wales  Trnity Saint David will provide exciting opportunities and we are fortunate to have received an investment  of  £14.3 million from the Welsh Assembly Govenrment to transform education which will in turn transform the lives of individuals and communities in South West Wales.
