Celts and Scorpians Come Together to Mark 150 Days Until the Paralympic Games

To mark the 150 day countdown to the start of the London 2012 Paralympic Games, Sport.Cardiff have hosted a competitive wheelchair basketball match between the Cardiff Celts All Stars and local rivals, the South West Scorpians.

The match took place at Cardiff University Sports Village, Talybont, the official Paralympic training facility and where the Australian wheelchair basketball team will be based as the make their preparations in the lead up to the Games.

The Celts All Stars Under 15 team took on the South West Scorpians and the final score was 20-15 to the visiting team.

Sport.Cardiff Disability Sports Officer, Jo Coates-McGrath said “It was fantastic to see all the young players enjoying a competitive game of basketball at a Paralympic training facility. The game was really close and all the players, coaches, and supporters thoroughly enjoyed it.”

The Celts All Stars are a division of the Cardiff Celts and are part of the Welsh wheelchair basketball junior development programme.

The Cardiff Celts Wheelchair Basketball Club was established in partnership between Sport.Cardiff and Disability Sport Wales almost ten years ago.

Cardiff is set to play an important role in the Games as the city is hosting Olympic football matches at the Millennium Stadium.

It will also provide pre-game training camps for a number of Olympic and Paralympic teams as they make their preparations for the start of the Games.

The capital has been confirmed as one of the cities to host the Paralympic Torch Relay which will lead the UK into the start of the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
