A local community centre in Port Talbot has scooped a top honour in a UK wide awards ceremony.
Aberavon Community Centre was the winner of the Best Performer category at the 2009 Awards made by the Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE).
The centre, which is managed by the Community Development Team at Neath Port Talbot Council’s Lifelong Learning Service, was recognised as having a community centre that embraces the ethos of value for money and serving the needs of the community.
APSE is a local government body working with over 300 councils throughout Britain to promote excellence in the delivery of public services.
The 2009 Awards were held recently in Blackpool in front of an audience representing local authorities from across the U.K.
Other centres managed by the Council were also recognised in the Most Improved Performer category. Mozart Drive Community Centre and Baglan Community Centre were finalists together with Aberavon Community Centre.
This is the third year running that Neath Port Talbot Council Community Centres have been nominated as finalists in the Awards.
“The APSE Awards are prestigious accolades which those involved in delivery of public services strive to aim for,” said Council Leader Ali Thomas.
“To receive recognition for the third year in a row is a great achievement for the community development team.
“These are just rewards for the hard work and dedication shown by them.”
