People will get a chance to have their say on a raft of education proposals in Swansea from Monday 21 March.
A consultation is starting on a plan to create a new Welsh Medium primary School in Bonymaen to help meet the rising demand for places.
The proposed new school would initially be sited on the former Cwm Primary School and would help to meet the urgent need for places by September 2012.
Swansea Council’s Cabinet agreed to proceed to consultation on the proposals last week. Mike Day, Cabinet Member for Education said:
“Existing schools cannot meet the expected demand in the coming years. By 2016 demand is expected to out-strip the number of classroom places by 73, in spite of the additional places already provided.
Consultation is also taking place on plans to create two new primary schools in Swansea serving pupils from the ages of three to 11 in the Clydach and Gorseinon areas.
The proposals have been prompted by the imminent retirement of the head teacher at Clydach Infant School and the head teacher at Gorseinon Junior School.
Under the proposals, Clydach Infant and Junior Schools would close with the creation of an all-through primary school on the existing sites.
Similarly Gorseinon Infant and Junior Schools would close and create an all-through primary school on the existing sites.
Meetings will be held with parents, staff, governors and pupils at both schools as part of the consultation process.
The comments and findings of the consultations will be analysed and fed back to Cabinet to make a decision on whether to proceed to Statutory Notice on the plans. This is another opportunity for people to voice their objection or support.
