Charity Music Event to Highlight ‘Silent Killer’

The Globe in Cardiff is pleased to host a music extravaganza taking place this weekend to raise money for Cancer Research Wales and highlight the necessity to look out for early signs of the disease.

Bethan Sinkins, from Cardiff, has organised the fundraiser, taking place this Sunday (6th Nov), after her sister and brother-in-law died of cancer within days of each other earlier this year.

Bethan’s sister Nikki Sylvester was 57 when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, also known as the silent killer, on 22nd July. Unfortunately it was caught too late and Nikki died just 28 days later on 19th August. Her former husband Doctor Joe Sylvester, who the family remained very close to, was diagnosed with the rarest form of kidney cancer, transitional cell carcinoma, in March last year. After having his kidney removed and being given the all clear this May, the cancer had already spread and Joe died six days after Nikki on 25th August.

Bethan said: “It was obviously a very sad time, but I wanted to try and salvage something positive from it. Nikki didn’t find out she had ovarian cancer until it was too late and Joe, whilst knowing the symptoms, did not seek medical help until it had already spread proving how important it is to check out unusual symptoms as early as possible.

“By organising this event I’m hoping to make people more aware of what to look out for and raise a lot of money for Cancer Research Wales who help to find new evidence based treatments.”

The live music event starts at 2:30pm on Sunday at The Globe on Albany Road and goes on until late. The acts include Cakehole Presley, Ska Face, Pete O’Driscoll, Dueling Biscuits, Bethan Morgan and Daf, up and coming band CF5 who include Nick Walker, Leighton Jones, Alexis Morgan and Mark Palladino plus guests Kelly Basano and Brian Vanoosterum, plus DJ support.

Bethan said: “All of the acts have volunteered and are performing free of charge which makes me realise how important friends are at a time like this and to whom I’m really grateful to. The Globe is also kindly only charging a minimal amount to cover its overheads, so all ticket money will go directly towards Cancer Research Wales.”

Cancer Research Wales Charity Director Liz Andrews said: “Bethan’s story about losing two members of her family in quick succession is sad but unfortunately all too common. All the money she raises will go towards funding vital and pioneering research into new cancer treatments and preventatives here in Wales.”

Tickets for the music event cost £7 or £5 for low income guests and can be purchased on the day. To reserve tickets in advance call Bethan on 07815 583792. To make a donation to Cancer Research Wales or find out how to organise your own event call 029 2031 6976 or [email protected].
