South Wales artist Charles Byrd has generously donated one of his automated machines to the Vale of Glamorgan Council.
The machine, entitled ‘A Maquette for a Futuristic Tower’, will be permanently sited in the County Library, Barry.
At the handing over ceremony Mayor of the Vale of Glamorgan, Cllr Colin Osborne, thanked Charles for his gift and for giving the people of the Vale of Glamorgan the opportunity to enjoy a piece of his art.
Charles Byrd was born in 1916 in Pontypridd. He is a self-taught painter, sculptor and kinetic artist. In 1948 he attended evening classes at Cardiff School of Art and in 1950 became a full-time artist. Until then he had a variety of jobs from photographer to aircraft fitter and has lived and worked in Cardiff for most of his life. In the 1960s he turned his attention to kinetic sculpture. His work is represented in many public collections throughout Wales and beyond.
