The Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) recently held a Communications Competition, which offers young civil engineers the opportunity to develop their communications skills in a role play public consultation.
The teams choose a scenario and then prepare a public consultation strategy for the regional rounds and semi-final and then the pre-construction community relations strategy for the final. They present their case in front of a live audience and panel of judges and also produce a public information leaflet to support their presentation.
Caerphilly County Borough Council’s team came first in the regional round of the competition allowing the team to progress to the next stage in April/ May.
The winning team consisted of five members; Nedw Llewelyn (Graduate Engineer), Dafydd Evans (Graduate Engineer), Josh Burkin (Student Engineer), Courtney Cochran (Student Engineer) and Steffan Jones (Technician/Part time student).
Cllr. Tom Williams, Cabinet Member for Highways, Transportation and Engineering said:
“Entering competitions such as these gives student and graduate engineers an opportunity to enhance their skills in a learning environment. I’d like to extend my congratulations to the team and wish them all the best in the next round of the competition.”
The Competition was held at Glamorgan University on the evening of the 19th of February, 2014 in front of a panel of three judges. The judges were Norman Seward, Chair of ICE Wales Cymru, Keith Jones, Director, ICE Wales Cymru and Richard Daly, Municipal Engineering Group.
The runners up were Arup Cardiff, CH2M HILL Cardiff, Mott Macdonald Cardiff and the University of South Wales.
