Residents over the age of 50, OAP groups and their families from Bedwas and the surrounding areas are invited to attend an event later this week, to learn more about home and community safety issues.
The FREE Cheese and Crime event will be held at Bedwas/Trethomas Community Hall on Wednesday 21st April from 4.00pm until 6.00pm.
Gwent Police, Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Community Safety Wardens and Trading Standards and various other agencies will be on hand. They will be providing important safety information, advice and tips on keeping safe, both in the home and when out in the community.
Pupils from Bedwas High School will also perform a short play about the dangers associated with doorstep crime, and in particular how to prevent becoming the victim of a scam, such as foreign lottery scams.
There will also be helpful tips and advice about how to prevent becoming the victim of a rogue trader or bogus caller.
There will be a free cheese and wine reception on arrival, followed by a game of bingo – with a safety message themed twist!
Cllr Lyn Ackerman, cabinet member for the environment said, “I have had the pleasure of going along to some of the other Cheese and Crime events, held recently throughout other parts of the county borough, and have been delighted with the sheer amount of valuable information and advice available to residents at these events.
I would encourage as many people as possible to come along to this event and take advantage of the wide range of important safety advice available.”
Bedwas, Trethomas and Machen ward officer PC Sian Lloyd, said: “We held a Cheese and Crime event last year which was really well received by the local residents who attended. This year we will be focusing on how to prevent becoming the victim of a scam with practical tips and advice. We’ll also be reinforcing the message that if something sounds too good to be true, then it usually is.”
The event is being organised by the Van and Graig Y Rhacca Communities First Partnerships and funded by the Safer Caerphilly Community Safety Partnership, as part of the Welsh Assembly Government’s Reassurance for Older People initiative.
