Chepstow Library is to mark the opening of its reading garden on World Book Night – Monday 23rd April – by holding a special celebration evening from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. Karl Daymond and the Singing Club will provide musical entertainment and everyone with an interest in reading, music or gardening is welcome. The event is free and there is no need to book.
Work on the reading garden has been underway since January with previously unused and litter-strewn land to the side of the library enclosed and made accessible via steps and a ramp. A working group of community volunteers and library staff is currently making changes while members of local gardening groups have improved the planting. Meanwhile, new planters made at Usk Prison are being installed and the WI has donated a small tree to help provide screening in the garden while also making waterproof cushions for seating.
The working group will form a friends’ group following the opening on 23rd April. Anyone interested in becoming involved and developing the reading garden as a community space should come along to the celebration evening or contact Chepstow Library staff.
The library’s reading garden is for all to enjoy and staff will be developing spaces for reflective reading, reading groups, storytelling and craft activities and for internet access using the library wi-fi. Staff are very keen to provide a storytelling chair and already, Shirenewton Primary’s year five pupils have provided fabulous design ideas.
Reading garden events in May include a morning for pet lovers on Saturday 5th May from 11am to 12pm when vets from Marlows will be answering questions on pet ownership and library staff will be reading pet themed stories. As part of Adult Learners’ Week the library will offer Tai Chi in the reading garden on Wednesday 16th May from 10am to 11am. Numbers for this event are limited so please contact the library to book a place.
