Children across Rhondda Cynon Taf stepped back in time to mark National School Meals week (8th-12th November) and remember all those soldiers who lost their lives in World War 2 and those that are still fighting for us in Iraq.
School meals started back in the 1940’s during World War 2 and primary schools across the County Borough invited some older people to join them on remembrance day to reminisce about what they were being served back in the day and ask them what it was like during war time.
Mary Evans, aged 77 from Rhondda, said: “It was lovely to step back in time and I must say school meals have changed considerably since I was in school.”
Porth Juniors, really went to town and invited several guests to join them. All the children dressed up as evacuees and the kitchen staff dressed up as land army girls.
The Council’s Catering Service treated the children to a very special menu, comprising of Roast Chicken, with Cabbage, Carrots, Potatoes and Gravy followed by Jam Sponge and Custard.
