A top TV gardener is coming to Swansea to share tricks of the trade with the public.
Blue Peter resident gardener Chris Collins will be at Castle Square’s Big Screen on Friday April 16 and Saturday April 17 to show people how to grow their own vegetables.
The event is part of the BBC’s travelling Dig In roadshow and will last from 11am to 5.30pm on both days.
Grow-your-own demonstrations, family entertainment, potting activities and games will be among the fun.
Free seed giveaways are also taking place and people will have the chance to quiz experts.
Chris said: “This is a great opportunity for inexperienced gardeners to learn how easy it is to get started growing their own vegetables.
“There is nothing like experiencing the process of growing and eating your own vegetables. Nurturing them from a tiny dormant seed to fresh food on the plate seems at first to be quite a daunting task but once a few basic skills are mastered you won’t look back.”
The Dig In campaign was a huge success last year and has been extended for a second year to encourage even more novice gardeners of all ages to discover the simple pleasure of growing and cooking their own vegetables.
This year’s Dig In vegetables are basil, salad leaves, carrots, courgettes and French beans.
BBC Wales, Swansea Council and the Swansea BID (Business Improvement District) are partners in the Big Screen project.
Frances Jenkins, Swansea Council’s Strategic Manager for Marketing, Tourism and Events, said: “This is another example of a great event that’s coming to the Big Screen and Castle Square.
“It will offer handy tips and pointers to gardeners of all abilities and ages as well as entertainment for the whole family.
“Swansea‘s Big Screen has been very successful since its introduction. Its events are both fun and educational and it adds vibrancy to the city centre.”
The Dig In website at www.bbc.co.uk/digin has a shed full of information for each of the five selected vegetables with advice about sowing, growing and harvesting. It will also provide regular updates to ensure support throughout the summer.
