Cynon Valley AM Christine Chapman has welcomed announcements from the Welsh Government of major investments in both education and transport networks in the Cynon Valley.
The news came as the Welsh Government published its 21st Century School Programme and its National Transport Plan.
Mrs Chapman said:
“These announcements show that the Welsh Government is delivering the services that people of the Cynon Valley need, despite receiving the worst ever Budget settlement from the UK Government, and are a welcome early Christmas present for the local community”.
Rhondda Cynon Taf is the big winner under the Welsh Government’s £1.4 billion schools programme, as nine projects to the value of £160 million will be completed by 2020, which represents £4,052 of investment per pupil. Amongst Cynon Valley projects to benefit from the funding will be secondary school modernisation in Aberdare.
£13 million will be used under the National Transport Plan to improve a number of local roads, which will include investment in the “Abercynon roundabout” on the A470 and in improving the road network in Mountain Ash and the safety of the A465 ahead of its dualling. Other priorities will include promoting sustainable transport such as improving walking and cycling routes, and in maintaining the concessionary bus travel scheme.
Mrs Chapman said: “These improvements are delivered by close working between the Welsh Government and local authority, and I would like to congratulate everyone involved.
“Our schools should be inspirational and fit for purpose. Our transport system should be safe, sustainable and fit for modern needs. With these announcements, the Welsh Government is ensuring we can achieve both these goals, and the people of the Cynon Valley get the services they deserve”.
