Christmas Market to boost seasonal spirits

They’re as much a part of festive celebrations in Germany as Santa Claus and now Swansea city centre is getting its very own Christmas Market.

The attraction is being extended this year to cover parts of Oxford Street and Princess Way and will be available from Friday November 26 right through to Sunday December 19.

Hand-crafted Christmas wreaths, roasted chestnuts and Welsh wines and liquors are among the produce visitors will be able to peruse.

Over 30 stalls are being set up. They will include traders selling gift ideas such as clothing, photography, jewellery, basketware, ornaments, international cheeses and crepes.

The stalls will be open everyday from 9am to 5pm and until 8pm on December 8, December 10, December 15, December 16 and December 17.

Music and magic entertainment is being arranged from noon to 2pm on each day of the market and on selected late night shopping evenings.

Swansea Market will also be open every Sunday from now until Christmas from 10.30am to 4pm.

Swansea Council
is behind the event.

Lisa Wells, Swansea City Centre Manager, said: “The Christmas launch party held in the city centre on the weekend helped kick-start festive spirits and the Christmas Market will help maintain the atmosphere throughout December.

“We’re looking to do all we can to get as many people into the city centre as possible this Christmas and offering a varied programme of Christmas entertainment and activities is key to achieving that.

“The combination of the Christmas Market with the indoor market and the city centre’s rich range of independent traders means there’s something for everyone.”

Cllr Chris Holley, Swansea Council Leader, said: “The countdown to Christmas is now in full swing with the imminent arrival of the Christmas Market in the city centre and Waterfront Winterland having returned to the grounds of the National Waterfront Museum.

“There’s a lot going on in Swansea this Christmas and it should be another season to remember.”
