Newport’s Christmas lights will be officially switched on by Newport’s Mayor Cllr Bill Langsford and 2010 Commonwealth Games competitors’ 18-year-old boxer Sean McGoldrick, sprint stars Christian Malcolm and Jenny McLoughlin and powerlifter Kyron Duke, on Sunday 21 November.
The activities will start at 1pm when a fantastic Christmas themed giant parade led by Newport’s Mayor and Mayoress and Wonderbrass will set off from Rodney Parade to John Frost Square and will take the following route: City Footbridge, Kingsway, Commercial Street and John Frost Square.
Members of Gwent Music will perform outside the Dolman Theatre, Kingsway as the parade passes and on arrival at John Frost Square entertainment will be provided by the Sing and Inspire choir.
Primary schools across Newport have been busy making giants for the parade which represent Snow, Nativity and the fun side of Christmas and include snowmen, Jack Frost, Father Christmas, elves, reindeer, Christmas trees and angels.
More than 1,300 youngsters are expected to take part in the parade and all the children involved will carry either a wand or wear a hat which they will have specifically made.
On the stage on High Street there will be performances from 1pm from the Tenovus Choir, CherryBeats, Vanessa Clarke School of Dance plus the Aladdin cast.
There will also be festive food stalls along Commercial Street, Christmas street entertainers, retail promotions and a Father Christmas and sleigh.
The Christmas lights will be officially switched on in Newport’s High Street at 5pm. A host of guests will join the Mayor and Red Dragons DJs for the Christmas countdown with fireworks followed by a performance from the Greatest Take That tribute band.
There will be free parking in the Cambrian and Park Square car park from 10am – 7pm.
