People whose leadership makes a difference to communities in Wales will be recognised at an awards ceremony this week.
The Archbishop of Wales, Dr Barry Morgan, will give the keynote speech at this year’s Leading Wales Awards which aim to promote outstanding leadership across the nation. For the second year running, the Church in Wales is sponsoring one of the eight award categories, Business Leadership in the Community.
Three people are on the shortlist for the Church sponsored award, which will be presented by the Bishop of Swansea and Brecon, Rt Rev John Davies. They are Mike Learmond, Regional Organiser, FSB North Wales, Geraint Lewis, MD Call of the Wild Ltd. and Nina Sardar, Business Development Executive Powlsons and Chairman, the Bay of Colwyn Business Network. Last year’s winner of the award was Rachel Bedgood, founder of Complete Background Screening.
The Leading Wales Awards takes place at the Hilton Hotel, Cardiff, on Thursday (Feb 25) at noon. This is the sixth year the Awards have taken place. They are organised by a consortium of professional institutes, voluntary and public sector as well as private companies. This year 26 people have been shortlisted in eight categories.
Canon Robin Morrison, Bishops’ Advisor on Church and Society, said, “The Church in Wales is delighted to be part of the Leading Wales Awards with its support for new aspirations and achievements across the country. Developing creative leadership initiatives within businesses of all kinds takes many forms. We believe the way a company relates to local communities reflects its internal spiritual architecture of people, value, trust, fulfilment and wellbeing.
“The Church has a ministry of encouragement. Practical examples of good leadership really matter in local communities and one task of the Gospel is to value and encourage them wherever they are found. These awards encourage people to help make our communities better places.”
In 2007, Revd Roger Hewett, Vicar of Blaina and Area Dean of Blaina Gwent, became the first clergyman to win a Leading Wales Award. He won the award in the category of Leadership Success through Partnership to develop skills in the workplace or community, in recognition of his work in the communities of Blaina and Nantyglo.
