City’s Transport Scheme Mobilises Itself to National Awards

Cardiff Council’s City Centre Management team has been nominated for a Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT UK) annual award for excellence 2011.

The team have been shortlisted in the category of Transport Policy, Planning and Implementation category. The criteria for this category looks at:

  • Improved methods used for planning, development and evaluation of policies, plans or projects.
  • A particular outstanding policy, plan or project which has been adopted for implementation .
  • Improvement in the quality of transport and local environment through implementation of a specific scheme.

The City Centre Management team have been selected due to their role and ongoing involvement with the Council’s City Centre Mobility Assistance Scheme.

The scheme consists of two electric three-seated golf buggies which travel around the city offering people in need a convenient lift to a destination of their choice.

Launched in October 2010, the scheme has proved hugely successful with more than 13,000 passengers using the buggies. It has been praised for penetrating the pedestrianised areas of the city centre, allowing passengers much more freedom to get around.

The scheme has already won a number of awards including the ‘Delivery of a Transport Scheme Showing Innovation/Excellence’ at CILT’s Wales National Transport Awards in May this year.

The CILT UK annual Awards for Excellence winners will be announced in October and Cardiff Council has been short listed alongside Transport for London and Worcestershire County Council.

Executive Member for Traffic and Transportation, Cllr Lisa Ford, said:

“Following on from the success at the all Wales CILT’s National Transport Awards, I am delighted that the scheme has now been short listed nationally across the whole of the UK.

“The City Centre Mobility Assistance Scheme has proved very popular and is a prime example of how the team have developed services in times of change. The team have received positive feedback from members of the public who have utilised the service.”
