Closing Date Approaching for Eisteddfod Main Prose Competitions

There’s less than two months to go before the first closing dates for the Vale of Glamorgan National Eisteddfod. Although only a few weeks have passed since the end of the Wrexham and District National Eisteddfod, preparations for next year’s festival are already gathering pace.

If you’d like to enter for the Prose Medal or the Daniel Owen Memorial Prize in 2012, your entry must be send to the Eisteddfod Organiser’s office by 1 December.  Details on how to compete are available in the list of competitions, available in Welsh bookshops across Wales and online at www.eisteddfod.org .uk.

In 2012, the Prose Medal will be awarded for a volume of creative prose, including no more than 40,000 words, responding to the title ‘Migration’.  The Medal and the financial prize of £750 are donated by Janet and Glenda and family in memory of Bill and Megan James.  This year’s adjudicators are Gwerfyl Pierce Jones, Aled Islwyn and Fflur Dafydd.

The Daniel Owen Memorial Prize is awarded for an unpublished novel of no less than 50,000 words.  John Rowlands, Gareth F Williams and Sioned Williams are the 2012 adjudicators and the winner will receive £5000 and the Medal.

Hywel Wyn Edwards, National Eisteddfod Organiser is urging people to compete, and says, “We are hoping that a large number of writers will compete in these competitions this time.  There’s only two months to go for anyone thinking of emulating the success of Daniel Davies and Manon Rhys at the Wrexham and District National Eisteddfod this year, so please make sure that we receive any work before the closing date.

“And remember, if you’ve not quite started writing yet, the subjects for the 2013 Prose Medal and Daniel Owen Memorial Prize have already been published, giving you enough time to prepare to compete in Denbighshire in 2013.”

31 January is the next important date for anyone wishing to compete in next year’s Eisteddfod.  This is the closing date for the drama writing competitions and for nominations for the Sir T.H. Parry-Williams Memorial Medal and the Science and Technology Medal.

The Vale of Glamorgan National Eisteddfod is held on the old airfield at Llandow from 4-11 August next year.  For more information, go to www.eisteddfod.org.uk.
