Coach drivers fined

Three Romanian drivers were fined a total of £1,260 after being stopped by officers from the commercial vehicle unit on Friday February 4th.

They were driving a Romanian registered coach and towing a trailer travelling westbound on the A55 on Anglesey heading for Eire and were carrying 20 passengers and their luggage.

North Wales Police Sergeant Ifan Jones said that the vehicle was found to be overweight and the longest period of rest the three drivers had taken in a 34 hour period was two hours.

“The vehicle had been on the move constantly from Romania and the trailer was also found to be overweight.

“The drivers were fined £1,260 in total which was paid at the roadside and the vehicle was not allowed to be used for a period of 45 hours. Alternative arrangements were made to take the passengers to the Port.

‘This is the third foreign registered coach, which has been found to be committing serious driver’s hours offences, that the commercial vehicle unit have stopped and checked in the last two weeks, a situation which will not be tolerated.

“Tired driver’s conveying passengers is totally unacceptable and efforts are ongoing to enforce this type of offending- making the roads of North Wales safer.'”
