Lack of time and sedentary office environments can often be a barrier to exercise, but Coleg Gwent staff have been getting active as part of an international health and wellbeing competition, Global Corporate Challenge.
Staff from Coleg Gwent’s campuses walked, cycled and swam around a virtual world through a pedometer challenge, logging their daily step count on the Global Corporate Challenge website and competing against teams from organisations across the world. Of Coleg Gwent’s six teams, Ebbw Vale Campus completed the challenge with the most steps recorded and averaged over 16,000 steps a day.
In addition to counting their steps at home and outside of work, the teams organised group walking sessions during lunch breaks which were open to all Coleg Gwent staff.
Manager for Organisation and Development Gill Pollock said: “Congratulations to ‘Team Ebbw Vale’ who are the deserving Coleg Gwent winners of the Global Corporate Challenge.
“Taking part in the challenge has enabled staff to feel the benefits of fitting exercise into their daily routine. Despite the end of the challenge, we are still looking for ways to achieve our target of 10,000 steps a day. With the evenings drawing in it is very easy to become more sedentary, but we are planning more group walks and activities during the winter months to help staff stay active.”
