Wales may not have made the World Cup but footy fever will hit Coleg Gwent when 20 teams hold their very own 5-a-side world cup on Tuesday 15 June.
Each team of students and staff will chose a country taking part in the world cup to represent at the College-wide tournament – with team members from curriculum areas such as care, construction and public services, as well as business support staff.
The event is part of the College’s Men’s Health Week campaign which will raise awareness of health issues that affect men. There will also be information and activities from local and national organisations including Diabetes Cymru, Tenovus and MIND Torfaen.
Each team will make a donation to take part, with proceeds going to the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK, because of the event’s link with football and promoting awareness of male cancer of all ages.
In keeping with the sporting theme, and timely with the Ryder Cup taking place in a few months, Alice Springs Golf Club will be setting up a driving range on the campus for teams to keep active whilst they aren’t playing.
Sport lecturer at Usk Campus Leon Annett explains more: “This event aims at promoting health awareness in men, and there isn’t a better way to do this than through football. It is also an opportunity to bring both staff and students from all of our campuses together for a fantastic event in which we aim to raise funds for a worthwhile cause.”
