Clwyd West Darren Millar AM has hit out at proposals from the Royal Mail which could see Colwyn Bay sorting office axed.
The Royal Mail has announced that it is to conduct a feasibility study to merge the Llandudno and Colwyn Bay sorting offices, resulting in the closure of the office in Colwyn Bay. Under the plans, all 54 members of staff working at Colwyn Bay would be transferred to Llandudno and there would be no compulsory redundancies.
The news comes just one week after the publication of a leaked document which raised concerns over the future of HMRC offices in the town.
Speaking after an urgent meeting with Royal Mail management to discuss the issue, Darren Millar said:
‘I’ll be fighting to keep Colwyn Bay sorting office open and strongly object to the Royal Mail’s plans.
‘The closure of the sorting office would be a heavy blow for the town and I have urged the Royal Mail to reconsider their plans and explore other options.
‘Colwyn Bay is currently the focus of regeneration efforts and for the Royal Mail to make one of the largest and most prominent buildings in the town redundant in this way will undermine the progress that is being made.’
He added, ‘Given the uncertainty over the future of Colwyn Bay tax office, the announcement by the Royal Mail could not have come at a worse time.’
