Commissioner’s special visit to Vale school

Youngsters at a Vale of Clwyd school have been learning all about their rights during a special visit by the Children’s Commissioner for Wales.

Keith Towler was invited to a special assembly at Rhos Street School in Ruthin on Thursday, 22 September.

During his visit, Mr Towler explained more about his role as a champion for children and young people and how he works to make sure that children and young people are kept safe and know about their rights.

Mr Towler also shared information about the School Ambassadors scheme being run in primary schools across Wales.

Ambassadors tell children in their school about the work of the Children’s Commissioner for Wales; tell children about children’s rights and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and work with school councils to find out what children in schools think could be made better and then work with other people in the school to change things.

Bryn Jones, Headteacher of Rhos Street School, said: “We were delighted that Mr Towler took time out of his very busy schedule to come and talk to our pupils. We felt that it was important that children know their rights as individuals, but also about their roles and responsibilities and what they can do to keep themselves safe.

Teacher Jo Williams, who had arranged the visit, said: “We had done some work around the rights of the child before Mr Towler’s visit and we felt it was important for pupils of all ages to hear from Mr Towler about his work. Our pupils enjoyed the experience immensely and certainly know a lot more about their rights after today !”

Speaking following his visit, the Children’s Commissioner for Wales, Keith Towler, added:“An important part of my role is to listen to what children and young people have to say about their lives and so it was a real pleasure to be able to speak at the whole school assembly and have such an interactive session.  I’d like to thank each and every one at the school for the fantastic welcome I got and I look forward to building that relationship with the pupils and teachers as they come on board as one of my ambassador schools.”
