Residents in Swansea can get an early Christmas present in December that will benefit the environment.
Swansea Council is hoping to give away hundreds of compost bins to residents who want to dispose of some of their domestic waste in a more environmentally friendly way.
The bins will also help residents produce their own compost which can be used to make the garden blossom.
Waste such as vegetable peelings, egg shells, tea bags and garden clippings can be added to the compost bin and will eventually break down to produce good quality compost.
Two special compost bin giveaway events have been organised on Friday December 3 and Saturday December 4.
Trish Flint, the Council’s Recycling Officer, said the giveaway is a maximum of one per household.
She said: “This is a great chance for people who have always wanted to do a spot of composting but perhaps were too afraid to ask.
“Every bin we give away comes with a free booklet on how to create the perfect compost. This means users won’t have to risk spending a penny of their hard-earned cash to get started and they’ll have years of trouble free composting opportunities to look forward to.”
The Council recently introduced a new alternate weekly collection service for the collection of domestic waste in Swansea. The changes have been made in a bid to reduce the amount of waste currently sent to landfill.
Trish added: “The compost bin giveaway is another way of diverting waste away from landfill sites and encouraging residents to be greener.”
The compost bin giveaway will take place at Corporate Building Services at Heol y Gors in Cwmbwrla from 1.30pm to 5pm on December 3 and the other at Unit 21 of St Lukes Court in Winch Wen Industrial Estate from 1pm to 4pm on December 4.
Bins have to be taken away on the day (only one bin per household) and, if residents are attending the giveaway on the Friday, they need to report to security on arrival. Supplies are limited so people are asked to arrive early to avoid disappointment.
