Composting Week in Neath Port Talbot

The climate change team at Neath Port Talbot Council is out and about this week (1-7th May) demonstrating the benefits of using compost bins.

To coincide with the 11th International Composting Awareness Week, exhibitions are being held across the county borough, the first at the Gnoll Visitor Centre on Monday (2nd May)

The purpose of Composting Week is to encourage more people to realise the benefits of home composting and what can be achieved by using peat free composts with recycled material.

The team explain how composting is easy to make and use and can be started at any time of the year. It is an inexpensive, natural process that changes kitchen and garden waste into a valuable and nutrient rich food for gardens.

It will improve soil for all types of beds for vegetables, flowers and ornamental shrubs.

30% of household waste is organic and can be turned into compost. Not just garden waste but items like tea bags, coffee grounds, cardboard and shredded paper as well as egg shells, tissues and kitchen roll.

Compost bins can be bought from the Council at discount prices. Two sizes are available – 220 litre bin for £5 and £6 for a 330 litre bin.

Apply online at www.npt.gov.uk/greener or ring 01639 686868 or call into Neath Civic Centre or Pontardawe One Stop Shop to order them.
