World-leading computer scientists have joined forces with a data services giant to give students invaluable experience.
Wrexham-based Avox is offering Glyndŵr University students a five-month paid placement with the company, which has offices in Singapore, London, Sydney, Tokyo and Boston.
Sited on Redwither Business Park, the organisation has also come up with cash prizes for the course’s best undergraduate and Masters’ representatives.
Glyndŵr’s Head of Computing, Professor Vic Grout, said partnerships with leading businesses such as Avox are “fantastic” for the University.
“I’m absolutely delighted that Avox has agreed to offer these internships, we’re very pleased for their support,” said Prof Grout.
“They are a significant force in the IT infrastructure of North Wales, offering excellent career opportunities for graduates with a variety of computing skills.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for Glyndŵr students to benefit from practical, hands-on experience in the workplace, embedded at a critical point in their degree studies.”
He added: “There will be strong competition for the awards and the winners each year will have to be exceptional.
“We have always been fortunate to work closely with Avox in the past and this is a great pointer to the relationship continuing into the future.
“It is a very clear indication of the strength of the Computing department at Glyndŵr University and our service and value to the local community as we continue to go from strength to strength.”
Greg Wenden, Chief Technology Officer at Avox, believes the competition will spur students on to success.
He said: “I am really excited about being able to offer the opportunity for students to come and experience working for a local company.
“As well as providing a benefit to Avox as we continue to grow the successful candidate will learn valuable skills and get paid.”
University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Michael Scott, says burgeoning relationships with key businesses across the UK are important for Glyndŵr’s future.
The institution works closely with companies all over the country, including Toyota, KK Fine Foods, Airbus and United Utilities.
“This is another fine example of our staff joining forces with local industry for the benefit of the students,” said Prof Scott.
“It’s a fabulous initiative and I look forward to seeing the results.”
Avox was founded in 2003 and provides legal entity data services. Clients form a community that subscribes to a shared pool of data, processes and resources.
This community collectively addresses data quality issues by sending counterparty data to be researched and validated by expert analyst teams at Avox.
The collaborative approach ensures customers are dealing with the most accurate and timely data available.
Glyndŵr University’s Computing department was deemed ‘world-leading’ in the UK-wide Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) conducted in 2008.
