New drains in Whitland failed to prevent snow melt almost flooding local homes, says local AM Angela Burns.
Instead it was the quick actions of a local farmer which prevented houses in Velfrey Road from another soaking.
“I am worried that this problem has happened once again as we had been reassured that the drains had been replaced and that there shouldn’t be a repeat of the problem,” said Mrs Burns.
However the heavy rain combined with the rapid melting of snow lead to flood waters reaching to the doorsteps of some properties in the road.
“The householders did get the automatic flood warning phone call early that morning so that system seems to be working well, however the drains once again failed to cope,” added Mrs Burns.
“I went to see the householders who showed me how high the levels got. The water didn’t get into the houses but that was purely thanks to the local farmer who spent four hours pumping out the drains with his slurry tankers.
“I know that the snow melt was a bit of a one off event but we have come to expect extreme weather conditions in the last few years and I am seeking reassurances that the new drains are fit for purpose.”
