BBC National Orchestra of Wales will be touring venues across mid and north Wales this November – this time joined by the young British conductor Michael Francis.
As part of its autumn tour, the Orchestra will visit Aberystwyth on Friday 8 November, Bangor on Saturday 9 November, and Llandudno on Sunday 10 November. Conductor Michael Francis returns to Wales for this tour, having previously lived in Cardiff while studying music at Cardiff University.
Initially joining the London Symphony Orchestra as a double bassist, Michael’s first conducting work was as an emergency replacement for Valery Gergiev, who had to miss a rehearsal due to a flight delay. Michael took the baton at the last minute – nowadays he has hung up his double bass bow and works solely as a conductor.
The concerts in mid and north Wales feature the cellist Daniel Muller-Schott, who will perform Dvořák’s Cello Concerto. The last concerto that Dvořák wrote, its beautifully lyrical melodies and exciting climaxes always impress and entertain audiences.
In the second half, audiences will be treated to Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No 6 – his Pathétique – which is one of his most passionate and romantic symphonies. After three rousing and energetic movements, the piece concludes with a sorrowful ending, written just days before the Russian composer died.
