Conference looks at services for older people

A conference about the need to change care services for older people in Gwynedd in response to the wishes of older people themselves as well as the financial situation facing the Council over the next few years will take place at Technium Cast in Bangor on Wednesday, 17 November 2010.

The conference will be an opportunity for councillors and partners to learn more about the positive changes which have already been made. It will also discuss the need for the Council to develop alternatives to traditional residential home care, to increase the provision of nursing care in some parts of the county, to increase extra care housing and to improve and expand care available for people with dementia.

Councillor Dai Rees Jones, who leads on Social Services for Gwynedd Council, said:

Gwynedd Council, and other bodies which provide services for people as they get older are having to face up to major challenges due to the significant increase in the number of older people in our communities and unprecedented cuts in the funding we receive to care for those who need our help and support.

“Not only is the traditional way of caring for people in residential care homes unsustainable, it is also contrary to the wishes of the vast majority of older people who want  to live independently in their own homes for as long as possible.

“This conference is a chance for us to hear more about what older people have said they want from the care services they receive now and for the future, and how we can develop sustainable services which meet these needs with less funding than in the past.”
