A period of formal consultation on the future of Bron y Graig Residential Home, Y Bala will begin on 27 September, 2010.
In accordance with the Council Board’s decision on 13 July, 2010, the Council has prepared a briefing pack on the two possible options for the home. Residents, their families and other stakeholders will have until 6 January, 2011 to present their comments.
The two possible options for Bron y Graig Residential Home are:
- keep the current building open and maintained in accordance with statutory requirements.
- bring the use of the building as a council managed residential home to an end.
Residents, families and other stakeholders can get more information about the process and present their comments on the two possible options by visiting the Council website www.gwynedd.gov.uk/bronygraighome or by requesting a consultation pack by phoning 01758704407. The information will be available on the Council website from Monday, 27 September onwards.
When the consultation period comes to an end in January 2011, a report on the results of the exercise will be presented to the Council’s Care Scrutiny Committee and Executive Board. It is expected that a final decision on the future of the facility will be made in March 2011.
Gwen Carrington, Gwynedd Council’s Head of Social Services, said:
“To ensure that Bron y Graig continued to meet fire regulations and health and safety requirements, the maximum number of residents that can be housed in the facility was reduced from 21 to 10 in 2005.
“As a result, Bron y Graig’s weekly cost per resident has increased to £1,212.89 per resident – this means that the cost per resident for Bron y Graig is £672.49 higher than the £540.40 average for the reminder of the Council’s care homes.
“The Council recognises that this is a difficult and uncertain period for residents, their families and the staff who provide a high quality service. The Council will provide all possible support and assistance to those affected throughout this period.”
Whilst the Council needs to come to a decision on the future of Bron y Graig, the Bala area has been identified as one of four areas of Gwynedd which will benefit from the Council’s Building for the Future programme to modernise care provision for older people.
In partnership with Cymdeithas Tai Clwyd, the Council has secured £4.3 million of capital investment from the Welsh Assembly Government’s Social Grant to develop 30 extra care housing units in Bala. Work on this development is expected to be completed in the Spring of 2012.
