Controlling Johne’s disease in an organic herd

A one-day workshop for farmers is to be held at ADAS Pwllpeiran, Cwmystwyth on Wednesday 26 May to discuss the control of Johne’s disease in organic herds. The event is being organised by Organic Centre Wales as part of the Farming Connect Organic Development Programme and is suitable for all organic livestock farmers.

“Johne’s disease is a chronic contagious infection that will affect production,” said David Frost of ADAS Pwllpeiran. “Fortunately there are many management strategies that can be carried out to prevent it and here at Pwllpeiran we have many years of experience which we are keen to share with farmers.”

Bruce Lawson, an independent vet, will talk about Johne’s disease and its control. In addition, Dr Pip Nicholas of IBERS, Aberystwyth University, will talk about current and future requirements in animal welfare for meeting organic standards.

Owen Davies of ADAS Pwllpeiran will talk about how the disease has been tackled at Pwllpeiran, and ADAS staff will then lead a walk around the farm, and discuss the practical considerations involved in mitigating Johne’s and other cattle diseases.

The event is being held at ADAS Pwllpeiran, Cwmystwyth, SY23 4AB on Wednesday, 26 May 2010 from 10.30 to 3.00pm. To book a free place, please contact Mari Jones: 07791 442498 or Phil Jones: 01970 622248.
