Clwyd West AM Darren Millar is urging Conwy Council to think again about proposals for “draconian” dog control orders.
Conwy County Borough Council is currently consulting on proposals to introduce dog control orders in the Conwy area. The orders will cover a number of areas including dogs on leads, dog fouling and dog exclusion zones. The Council’s consultation is due to close on 10th March.
When asked to comment Darren said: “The Council needs to think again about these Dog Control Orders.
“I strongly oppose these draconian measures and have already made my views known to the Council.
“The vast majority of owners exercise their dogs responsibly. Instead of punishing them, the local authority should do a better job of prosecuting those irresponsible dog owners who are breaking the law.
“Given the widespread concerns over the proposals and the number of people who want to make representations, I’ve also requested the Council extend the consultation period on this matter. I hope they will grant the request.”
Supporting Darren Millar’s calls, Caroline Kisko, Communications Director of the Kennel Club said:
“Dog control orders are becoming more common as councils attempt to find ways to control dog fouling and rein in irresponsible dog owners. Unfortunately this often means responsible dog owners are also penalised and have to suffer restrictions.
“Frequently, public consultations come and go without the majority of the public knowing about them or having a chance to have their say. The Kennel Club has therefore established dog owners group KC Dog, which aims to alert people to dog control order consultations and thereby ensure the fairest outcome for all.”
